US sex-abuse watchdog fires investigator after learning of his arrest for stealing drug money DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Center for SafeSport abruptly fired one of its investigators last month after learning he’d been arrested for stealing money confiscated after a drug bust he was part of during his previous job as a police officer. Jason Krasley left his job with the Allentown Police Department in Pennsylvania in 2021 and was hired by the Denver-based SafeSport center to look into sensitive cases involving sex abuse and harassment. The center said it conducts multiple interviews and a “comprehensive background check” of potential employees. The center said it was looking into cases Krasley handled to make sure they were dealt with appropriately. Google officials were in town Monday to celebrate what they said was a $930 million investment in the state this year through three data centers in Omaha, Papillon and the still-under-construction center in Lincoln. This year’s investment brings the total capital investment in the state to $4.4 billion, said Karen Dahut, CEO of Google Public Sector. “In addition to supporting our great government customers, in particular those in the national security area, these data centers are critical to making sure that Google’s investment in technologies can be leveragable by those missions,” she said. As part of the giant tech company’s effort to be a good neighbor, officials announced that its philanthropic arm donated $250,000 to the University of Nebraska and $100,000 to the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools. University of Nebraska President Jeffrey Gold said the Google dollars will help the university expand its new bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence, one of the first of its kind in Nebraska. “We will be investing these dollars in educational programming to understand as best we can how generative artificial intelligence and machine learning needs to touch every one of our educational programs, all of our research programs, and all of our outreach and clinical programs, our extension services," he said. "These dollars ... will give us a very, very solid foundation to build upon that." Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said the money donated to the LPS Foundation will support Spark Summer Learning, a summer camp for elementary students focusing on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Google’s investment will allow LPS to invest in more state-of-the-art technology and offer scholarships to 40 students, said Gaylor Baird, one of a number of local and state leaders on hand for the event at Nebraska Innovation Campus. In August 2023, Google officials confirmed that the company would build a data center on about 600 acres of land northwest of the 56th Street exit on Interstate 80 that will employ at least 30 people. Plans it submitted to the city indicate it could eventually grow to 2 million square feet of space. Google, through a subsidiary, paid about $18.6 million for the land , and another subsidiary applied for $600 million in state tax incentives. The timeline for construction is not finalized, but a Google spokeswoman said the company hopes to have it operational within the next 12 months. In 2019, Google broke ground on a data center in Papillion and has since created 120 jobs that include full-time positions at the site and for external suppliers, according to Google officials. A data center in northwest Omaha is now operational, and the tech giant also has a data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The campuses are part of the company’s global network on 41 cloud regions that deliver services to large enterprises, startups and public sector organizations. Dahut said the company worked with local agencies to promote the health of the Platte River basin through collaborations with organizations to replenish 120% of the water it consumes. She said a collaboration with Omaha Public Power District enables Google to supply more than 1,000 megawatts of carbon pollution-free electricity to the state and execute “large-scale clean energy deals.” U.S. Sen. The slump in the number of people heading to the shops during Boxing Day sales signals a return to declining pre-pandemic levels, an analyst has said. Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6 billion will be spent overall on the festive sales. Before the pandemic the number of Boxing Day shoppers on the streets had been declining year on year. The last uplift recorded by MRI was in 2015. Jenni Matthews, marketing and insights director at MRI Software, told the PA news agency: “We’ve got to bear in mind that (last year) was our first proper Christmas without any (Covid-19) restrictions or limitations. “Figures have come out that things have stabilised, we’re almost back to what we saw pre-pandemic.” There were year-on-year declines in footfall anywhere between 5% and 12% before Covid-19 restrictions, she said. MRI found 12% fewer people were out shopping on Boxing Day in 2019 than in 2018, and there were 3% fewer in 2018 than in 2017, Ms Matthews added. She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. It will also be payday for some as it is the last Friday of the month. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. However, a quarter of respondents aim to spend mostly in store – an 11% rise compared with last year. Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it is encouraging to hear that consumers will be actively participating in the post-Christmas sales. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down more than 300 points midmorning, while the Nasdaq Composite Index, which contains more technology-focused stocks, slid almost 2%. “Initially the market was so focused on the positives of the Trump election but I think there’s more uncertainty with tariffs and immigration as we look to next year,” said Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer and chief market strategist for Truist. “You’re seeing some increasing inflation. The 10-year has been creeping up every day.” The 10-year U.S. Treasury note was trading around 4.58% on Friday morning, after climbing about 30 basis points over the past month. Bond yields rise when prices fall, and investors often sell Treasury bonds and notes when they expect inflation to rise. Inflation is also likely to eat at company profit margins, making stocks less valuable. “The strong economy, combined with the potential for lower taxes, higher tariffs, and restrictions on immigration, has increased the risk that the Fed will have to hike rates in 2025,” wrote Apollo Global Management Chief Economist Torsten Slok on a note to clients in mid-December. Staffordshire Police said officers received a report of a man in his 30s in cardiac arrest on Elm Road, Norton Canes, at around 3.25am on Christmas Day. A statement released by the force on December 25 read: "We were called to a report of a man in his 30s in cardiac arrest on Elm Road, Norton Canes at around 3:25am this morning. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services at the scene, he passed away a short while later. "The man’s next of kin have been informed and are now being supported by specially-trained officers. A 33-year-old woman from Cannock has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody." The statement added that a police and forensic presence was expected to remain at the scene for "a number of days", adding that a post mortem was scheduled to be carried out today (Boxing Day). A neighbour of Mr Price claimed to the Mail Online that at about 4.30am on Christmas Day she heard a female voice crying loudly over and again, "no, no, no". She told the paper: "I didn't know what was going on but it sound[ed] serious, I looked outside and the emergency services were everywhere." She added she believed Mr Price's parents were "away on holiday when it happened, They usually go away to the Maldives for Christmas and that may have been where they were. America loves a parade. America also loves to learn from Oprah, to rock with Ryan Seacrest on New Year’s Eve and to belt out the hits with Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden. The list of the year’s top 25 most-watched entertainment specials is topped by NBC’s Turkey Day telecast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which hauled in 23.4 million viewers in Nielsen’s Live-plus-7 measure covering live viewing plus seven days of delayed viewing. Two Oprah Winfrey-hosted specials made the list, one for ABC (coming in at No. 19) and one for CBS (No. 24). The Rose Parade, the annual New Year’s Day trek of floral floats through Pasadena, nabbed two slots on the list (No. 14 and No. 17). NBC’s national coverage grabbed 5.4 million viewers while ABC’s coverage of the parade leading in to the college football game at the Rose Bowl garnered 5.1 million. A number of music-themed specials made the cut, led by ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” (No. 4). The prime 90-minute portion of the five-hour telecast brought in 18 million viewers from 11:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 31 through 1 a.m. ET on Jan. 1. Billy Joel’s milestone 100th consecutive performance in his Madison Square Garden residency (No. 10) pulled in 6.5 million fans for CBS in April. A starry tribute to the late country artist Toby Keith (No. 20) drew 4.6 million viewers for NBC in August. Kudocasts, of course, dominate the top 10. The “Barbenheimer” effect helped ABC’s Academy Awards telecast rebound well after several down years to rank No. 2 with 20.2 million viewers. The Grammy Awards (No. 3) and the Golden Globe Awards (No. 6) easily outpaced the two Emmy Awards telecasts (No. 7 and No. 18) of the year. The American Music Awards (No. 12) had a solid showing with its 50th anniversary special on ABC. The rankings below cover non-sports broadcast TV specials that aired in 2024. Honorable mentions are warranted this year for two streamers who put up ambitious live efforts: Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady,” which aired live May 5 and generated quite a bit of pop culture buzz; and Peacock’s first-ever live special, “Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark,” which ran Sept. 12.
