Furthermore, the increase in market confidence can also be attributed to improving economic conditions and favorable lending rates. As the economy gradually rebounds from the impact of the pandemic, consumers are more willing to consider homeownership as a viable investment option. Additionally, low-interest rates make borrowing more affordable, further incentivizing prospective buyers to enter the market.
TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — A U.S. senator has called for mysterious drones spotted flying at night over sensitive areas in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region to be “shot down, if necessary,” even as it remains unclear who owns the unmanned aircraft. “We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said Thursday, as concerns about the drones spread across Capitol Hill. People in the New York region are also concerned that the drones may be sharing airspace with commercial airlines, he said, demanding more transparency from the Biden administration. The White House said Thursday that a review of the reported sightings shows that many of them are actually manned aircraft being flown lawfully. White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said there were no reported sightings in any restricted airspace. He said the U.S. Coast Guard has not uncovered any foreign involvement from coastal vessels. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus,” Kirby said, echoing statements from the Pentagon and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh has said they are not U.S. military drones. In a joint statement issued Thursday afternoon, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security said they and their federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, “continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” The agencies said they have not corroborated any of the reported sightings with electronic detection, and that reviews of available images appear to show many of the reported drones are actually manned aircraft. “There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space,” according to the statement. The drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio, according to a state lawmaker briefed Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. The number of sightings has increased in recent days, though officials say many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. It’s also possible that a single drone has been reported more than once. The worry stems partly from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. In a post on the social media platform X, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights switched off. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use but are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey appeared to be larger than those typically used by hobbyists. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey said he was frustrated by the lack of transparency, saying it could help spread fear and misinformation. “We should know what’s going on over our skies,” he said Thursday. John Duesler, president of the Pennsylvania Drone Association, said witnesses may be confused about what they are seeing, especially in the dark, and noted it’s hard to know the size of the drones or how close they might be. “There are certainly big drones, such as agricultural drones, but typically they are not the type you see flying around in urban or suburban spaces,” Duesler said Thursday. Duesler said the drones — and those flying them — likely cannot evade detection. “They will leave a radio frequency footprint, they all leave a signature," he said. "We will find out what kind of drones they were, who was flying them and where they were flying them.” Fantasia, a Morris County Republican, was among several lawmakers who met with state police and Homeland Security officials to discuss the sightings from the New York City area across New Jersey and westward into parts of Pennsylvania, including over Philadelphia. It is unknown at this time whether the sightings are related. Duesler said the public wants to know what's going on. “I hope (the government agencies) will come out with more information about this to ease our fears. But this could just be the acts of rogue drone operators, it’s not an ‘invasion’ as some reports have called it,” Duesler said. “I am concerned about this it but not alarmed by it.” Associated Press reporters Mark Scolforo in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and reporter Darlene Superville and videojournalists Serkan Gurbuz and Nathan Ellgren in Washington, D.C., contributed to this report.

Drones for commercial and recreational use have grown rapidly in popularity, despite restrictions on who can operate them and where they can be flown. No-fly zones are enforced around airports, military installations, nuclear plants, certain landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, and sports stadiums during games. Not everybody follows the rules. Sightings at airports have shut down flights in a few instances. Reported sightings of what appear to be drones flying over New Jersey at night in recent weeks have created anxiety among some residents, in part because it is not clear who is operating them or why. Some state and local officials have called for stricter rules to govern drones. After receiving reports of drone activity last month near Morris County, New Jersey, the Federal Aviation Administration issued temporary bans on drone flights over a golf course in Bedminster , New Jersey, that is owned by President-elect Donald Trump, and over Picatinny Arsenal Military Base . The FAA says the bans are in response to requests from “federal security partners.” The FAA is responsible for the regulations governing their use , and Congress has written some requirements into law. With a 2018 law, the Preventing Emerging Threats Act, Congress gave certain agencies in the Homeland Security and Justice departments authority to counter threats from unmanned aircraft to protect the safety of certain facilities. New drones must be outfitted with equipment allowing law enforcement to identify the operator, and Congress gave the agencies the power to detect and take down unmanned aircraft that they consider dangerous. The law spells out where the counter-drone measures can be used, including “national special security events” such as presidential inaugurations and other large gatherings of people. To get a “remote pilot certificate,” you must be at least 16 years old, be proficient in English, pass an aeronautics exam, and not suffer from a ”mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of a small unmanned aircraft system.” Yes, but the FAA imposes restrictions on nighttime operations. Most drones are not allowed to fly at night unless they are equipped with anti-collision lights that are visible for at least 3 miles (4.8 kilometers). Over the past decade, pilots have reported hundreds of close calls between drones and airplanes including airline jets. In some cases, airplane pilots have had to take evasive action to avoid collisions. Drones buzzing over a runway caused flights to be stopped at London’s Gatwick Airport during the Christmas travel rush in 2018 and again in May 2023 . Police dismissed the idea of shooting down the drones, fearing that stray bullets could kill someone. Advances in drone technology have made it harder for law enforcement to find rogue drone operators — bigger drones in particular have more range and power. Some state and local officials in New Jersey are calling for stronger restrictions because of the recent sightings, and that has the drone industry worried. Scott Shtofman, director of government affairs at the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, said putting more limits on drones could have a “chilling effect” on “a growing economic engine for the United States.” “We would definitely oppose anything that is blindly pushing for new regulation of what are right now legal drone operations,” he said. AirSight, a company that sells software against “drone threats,” says more than 20 states have enacted laws against privacy invasion by drones, including Peeping Toms. Will Austin, president of Warren County Community College in New Jersey, and founder of its drone program, says it's up to users to reduce public concern about the machines. He said operators must explain why they are flying when confronted by people worried about privacy or safety. “It's a brand new technology that's not really understood real well, so it will raise fear and anxiety in a lot of people,” Austin said. “We want to be good professional aviators and alleviate that.” Associated Press reporter Rebecca Santana in Washington, D.C., contributed.

Three Pittsburgh Steelers starters missed their second consecutive practice of the week due to injury on Thursday, putting their status for Sunday’s Week 15 game against the Philadelphia Eagles in serious doubt. Wide receiver George Pickens (hamstring), defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (groin) and strong safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring) did not practice on Thursday after also missing practice on Wednesday. Pickens has already been listed as doubtful by head coach Mike Tomlin , and the team has been preparing to play without him since the start of the week. He first suffered the injury on last Thursday and was initially listed as questionable for last Sunday’s Steelers game against the Cleveland Browns. But Pickens couldn’t get through a pregame workout and was a late scratch. An MRI revealed more substantial damage than initially thought. Van Jefferson got back into the starting lineup to replace Pickens against the Browns after being replaced by Mike Williams the week before, and Scotty Miller got a helmet for the first time in three weeks, rewarding the Steelers’ faith with three catches for 38 yards. Ogunjobi suffered his groin injury in the game against the Browns. He came back in for one play, but was not able to continue. Ogunjobi has played after not practicing early in the week before, so his status for Friday should be closely monitored. Montravius Adams appears ready to come off the injured reserve list to replace him, if necessary. Adams was a full participant for the second straight practice. Strong safety DeShon Elliott was also out for the second straight day. He finished the game with the Browns after suffering the hamstring injury mid-game, but has not practice since. Furthermore, the Steelers had Cam Sutton working with the safeties on Thursday. Sutton would likely be the fourth safety if Elliott can’t dress, with Eric Rowe a potential call-up from the practice squad. On The Hard Shoulder , Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon said the parliamentary party “took a kicking” this week . “I suppose we have to get ourselves up off the mat, and we have done that, we regrouped fairly quickly,” he said. “I think the decision we made with the parliamentary party was swift, it was in accordance with our values to stand for accountability. “We haven't shied away from it, we've met the press every single day since, we've stood over ourselves. “So I think we've in terms of how we reacted, I'm quite proud of that, but it was a tough day for us.” Speaking about an article in The Irish Independent discussing political accountability , Deputy Gannon said that he was mentioned several times “rightfully so” as he “didn’t meet standards last week”. “We never claimed to be pure,” he said. “We say our foundational sounds are transparency and accountability, we have standards that if we don't meet, that we will treat ourselves as we treat those who haven't met them too.” Deputy Gannon doesn’t know if he can see Eoin Hayes back in the party. “This has been an absolute whirlwind of a week,” he said. “I think time will tell its own tale - there's a lot of lessons to be learned for all of us here.” On Government negotiations, Deputy Gannon said the Soc Dems don’t want to be in Government “just to make up numbers”. “We made a commitment before the election to the electorate that we would meet with every single party,” he said. “We met with Labour, we met with Sinn Féin and yesterday we met with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, which was very interesting. “Today, the parliamentary party decided to go a little bit deeper and meet and actually have another meeting with all the other parties again. “I mean, this is what an effective political party should be doing after an election like I don't want to sit in perennial opposition, I want to have my policies on the table, and this is how that starts.” Deputy Gannon added that the party will "drive a hard bargain" throughout negotiations. Cuba is currently undergoing another 'special period,' as is struggles with one of the worst economic and energy crises in its history. Besides waves of blackouts, citizens are frustrated over food shortages and inflation. Hundreds of thousands have migrated, many headed to the United States. Large-scale blackouts left 10 million people — already reeling from a deepening economic crisis — without power for days in October. Cuba's government has faced simmering frustrations and rare protests after it sharply hiked gas prices, further squeezing the pocketbooks of Cubans, who struggle to pay for the most basic food items, like eggs and chicken. The Cuban government blames the U.S. economic embargo for its woes, but Cuba's power grid has been left in disrepair and the government has long failed to invest in alternative energies like solar power, despite a plethora of sunshine. As a result, Cuba's main source of power has been fossil fuels. It long depended on its regional ally Venezuela until aid disappeared as the oil-rich nation fell into crisis. In recent years, Cuba leaned on Russia, which was sending hundreds of millions of dollars in fuel just two years ago. That helped to alleviate a massive shortfall in Cuba's supplies while simultaneously helping to ease the weight of international sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
